Lipids
Learning Target: Student will be able to describe the monomers and polymers of lipids and their function.
There are many types of lipids. Everyone knows about the lipids that we store as fat, but you might not know that those are stored energy. When the body has too many carbohydrates, it stores some of them into lipids and keeps them for a rainy day.
- We will be discussing lipids more in the next unit.
- Lipids are also the substance that make up the "shell" of our cells.
- There are two parts of a lipid; the glycerol head and long fatty acid tales (made of carbon).
- Lipids are hydrophillic (meaning they do not like water) and this property is what makes them great for making up our cell wall.
